Establishing a monthly routine will greatly relieve the stress (both emotionally and physically) if followed closely. First, keeping a close watch on your calendar will help you schedule important events around the days that you will be at your worse. The severity of your cramps is only intensified by stress (which can occur when you realize your period will hit at an inconvenient time).
