How Do You Determine Diamond Carat Weight By Measurements?
The carat weight of a diamond can only be accurately determined by weighing the stone, as carats are specific weight measurements equaling 200 milligrams, or 1/142 of an ounce. However, if you can make accurate measurements of the physical dimensions of the stone, you can get a rough estimate of the total carat weight. As a stone is rarely symmetrical, you will have to take a number of different measurements. Measure the stone in millimeters. Start with the three cardinal measurements of width, length and depth. Use the flat face on top of the diamond, known as the table, for the length and width measurements. Depth is measured from the top of the stone straight through its longest axis, down to the point at the bottom. Determine the stone’s diameter. Typically, a diamond will be cut to flare out to a wider point beneath the flat surface on top of the diamond to add to its brilliance.
