A meningioma is a benign, encapsulated tumor that originates from arachnoidal cells in the meninges. They commonly originate on the surface of the brain but also may arise in intraosseous or intraventricular locations. The classification of meningiomas is controversial because arachnoidal cells exhibit both epithelial and mesenchymal characteristics. Also, similar tumors such as hemangiopericytomas or sarcomas can arise from other mesodermal tissue. The following steps will show how to diagnose a meningioma. Expect symptoms of meningiomas to be variable and specific to their location. The symptoms are produced by three separate mechanisms. They can irritate the underlying cortex, compress the underlying brain and cause vascular injuries to the brain. Rely on imaging to diagnose a meningioma.
