Before you dispose of an empty propane cylinder, consider the options. You may be able to have it refilled so that you can continue to use it. Also, you may be able to recycle it. If those options are not available, you’ll need to dispose of it at your local hazardous waste facility. Hook up your propane tank to an outdoor grill or similar outdoor appliance that uses propane. Turn the tank on by turning the knob counter-clockwise. Light the appliance and let it run until it burns out. Turn the knob clockwise to close it and disconnect it from the appliance. Your tank is now empty. Take the empty tank to your local hazardous waste facility or recycling center.
