How do you divide mixed fractions?
You have two mixed fractions and are expected to divide them. How do you do that? The whole numbers cannot easily be divided into each other and the denominators are different. Yet it’s really not that hard. Get out a piece of scratch paper, clear your mind and learn how to divide mixed fractions. The sample problem we’ll work with in this article is 1-3/4 divided by 3-1/2. Change both of the mixed fractions into improper fractions. You do this by multiplying the whole number by the denominator and then adding it to the numerator. In 1-3/4, 4 times 1 = 4 and 4+3 equals 7, so the improper fraction is 7/4. For the next mixed number, 3 times 2 = 6 + 1 = 7, so 3-1/2 would become 7/2. Nothing else in the problem changes.
