Hi, i did a narrative observation when i was in placement at a nursery. A Narrative observation is when you record everything that the child is doing that is fact. First you pick a child, say if you did the observation on a child in a nursery then you have to write a letter to the parents asking their permission to do the observation. If you do get permission then next step is to do the actually observation letting the people in charge know that you are doing the observation. You need a piece of paper and you write the date, name of the child, the age of the child, and where you’re doing the observation e.g in the dressing up corner, outside in the play area etc. You also need to put the time when you start observing the child (the observation should be around 5 minutes) and the time when you finish the observation.
