How Do You Equip A Tornado Shelter Area?
If you live in tornado-prone areas, you’ve probably spent tome time in your home’s tornado shelter or safe room area. While thankfully, the vast majority of tornado warnings and watches are relatively brief (and harmless!), your shelter stays will be much more comfortable with a little bit of advance preparation. Pack a high quality flashlights and batteries: Many tornado warnings occur during thunderstorms, making power outages highly likely. And since tornado shelters are generally in windowless areas, it makes sense to pack two or three flashlights in your emergency kit. Pack several unopened packages of batteries, too. Locate a battery-operated radio: Tornado sirens can be difficult to hear from your shelter area, so it’s a good idea to pack a small battery-operated radio. Try it out ahead of time to make sure that you’re able to pick up at least one or two local stations. Include a package of fresh batteries, too.
