Nestled in the southeastern corner of Arizona, Chiricahua National Monument rises above an almost flat plain. Driving around a bend, cliffs surprise travelers at the park entrance. “Hoodoos,” appear in forest-like rock formations caused by an ancient volcano. Erosion and weather have created an amazing amphitheater which changes as travelers turn every corner. Arrive at the Visitor Center early in the day to allow time for viewing and/or hiking. The drive in from the nearest towns can take an hour and a half. Pay the admission fee, examine the exhibits and use the rest facilities. With a short time to visit, drive to the end of the 8-mile scenic drive to Massai Point. A natural, open amphitheater provides views from every direction. (Beyond the paved area, the walks are not handicap accessible.) If staying in the vicinity of Massai, several interesting “photo-ops” are available. A balancing rock provides one memorable photo.
