Although treadle sewing machines aren’t difficult to use, you must learn to control both the movement of the machine via the foot pedal and the fabric at the same time. It’s important that the fabric feeds evenly into the machine to produce neat, straight seams and well-crafted final garment. Some tricks used with modern machines work well with a treadle sewing machine; other techniques are more specific to treadle machines. Learn to control the treadle before you attempt to sew on a treadle sewing machine. Treadle the machine without thread or fabric. Work to treadle smoothly, starting and stopping until you get used to it. Use a coloring book page or simple drawing on paper to practice. Prepare a number of fabric samples so that you can work on feeding fabric evenly. Try lightweight cotton fabrics, medium-weight twill, and heavy denim. Consider practicing with samples of silk, satin, and/or upholstery fabrics if you typically sew with these. Place a fresh needle into your treadle sew
