Regardless of the hole size, one needs to use Spackle & a putty knife (2″-3″ would be most usable. -If the holes are small, say from nails or screws…just put some spackle on the putty knife and evenly fill the hole and extend the spackle beyond the hole. Once dry it can be dry or wet sanded then painted. -For larger holes, you would need some type of backing plate to cover the back of the hole while you fill it in with spackle. Once dry, finish as above. -When filling very large holes, I like to slip in wood strips behind the hole, screwing (sheetrock screws work great) them to the plasterboard on either side of the hole (creating a firm backing). You might need a few of these if the hole is very large. Take a piece of plasterboard (the same thickness as the hole) and cut it a little smaller than the hole. Screw this into the sheetrock and the backing boards to hold it to the wall. Make sure all screws are slightly depressed into the sheetrock… but try to not break thru the paper s
