Spinning reels feature an open-face design rather than being enclosed as with a spin cast reel. The line is wound onto a spool that is mounted to the front of the reel behind a bail. It may become necessary to perform routine troubleshooting, which oftentimes involves a thorough cleaning. With a few common items, you can solve many frequently occurring problems with spinning reel spools. Step 1 Remove any fishing line that is on the reel to properly inspect and clean the spool. Dispose of the line properly by cutting into smaller sections and placing in an old plastic container for recycling. Step 2 Remove the spool from the reel. This will most commonly require unscrewing a retainer that allows the spool to slide forward for removal.
