Fixing dents in drywall is a simple process and requires a couple of inexpensive items. Step 1 Sand the damaged area with a fine-grit sanding block to rough up the finish so that it holds the spackling paste well. Wipe the area with a soft cloth to remove sanding dust. Step 2 Apply spackling paste to the dent using a putty knife. Dip the putty knife into the spackling paste, and scoop some onto the end. Place the spackling paste into the dent, and pull the putty knife flat across the wall to push the spackling paste completely into the hole and flatten the surface even with the wall.
