How Do You Fix Gold Necklace Burs?
A bur on a gold necklace is a tiny rough spot that is uncomfortable and can cause weak links in your necklace. Burs can scratch your skin while you are wearing your jewelery. While weak links should be repaired by a professional goldsmith, burs can be smoothed down at home with extra fine grit sandpapers known as emery cloth and crocus cloth. Emory and crocus cloths are available in hardware stores, upholstery supply stores or through jewelers. Soak the necklace in jewelery cleaner for 5 minutes and wipe it dry with the soft cloth. Let it air dry 15 minutes or until it is completely dry. Smooth the bur from the necklace using the tip of you finger with emery cloth wrapped around it. Make a very small side to side motion. Run your finger over the area with the bur to test for smoothness. Use light pressure so you do not damage the gold.
