In the Windows XP operating system, all critical system files are stored in the “system32” folder on the main hard drive of your computer. This folder includes the “config” system file, which contains important data that is needed to properly run Windows XP. If you are experiencing problems with the config system file, you can repair your Windows installation. Before doing so, you should back up all of your personal data. Step 1 Back up all important data from your computer onto an external hard drive or other media. Step 2 Insert the Windows XP installation CD into your computer’s disk drive and restart the computer. Step 3 Press any key on your keyboard when you see the loading screen asking if you want to boot to the CD. The Windows XP installation CD will begin loading system files necessary for repairing the config system file. Step 4 Hit the “Enter” key at the setup window to enter the Windows XP installation menu. Step 5 Hit the “F8” key to accept the Windows license agreement.
