Normally when one thinks of satellite TV, what comes to mind is DIRECTV, Dish Networks, etc. But did you know that there are many satellites in orbit around the earth that offer free TV? This is referred to as Free To Air Satellite Television. While DIRECTVT and Dish Networks require subscribers to pay in order to watch their programming, FTA satellite programming is unencrypted, meaning it is free for everyone to see. All you need is an unobstructed view of the southern sky, an FTA satellite receiver and a dish. Sound like a daunting task? Not really, with a compass, a few basic tools, and a little elbow grease you should get through this project in an afternoon. Deciding where to place your new satellite dish is probably the most important step in this entire process. The satellites you’ll be aiming at orbit the earth in a geostationary orbit over the equator. Therefore a clear unobstructed view of the southern sky (or northern sky if you’re in the southern hemisphere) is paramount.
