Beginning in 2006 Russia began an overhaul of the process for international adoptions, including the requirements for international adoption agencies. Under the new regulations and laws, adoption agencies are no longer accredited but are given a Russian Permit for Adoption Activity that stands as proof that the agency is licensed to operate in Russia. This permit does not require an annual renewal, although the agency must remain in good standing with the government and remain in compliance with all laws pertaining to international adoption agencies to prevent the permit being revoked.
