Often professionals will recommend an acid wash for this problem, but before you spend the time and money on this expensive and time-consuming option, try a simple, do-it-yourself remedy that will often get rid of algaecide stains effectively and without the danger of muriatic acid. Fill the sock half-full of the powdered mineral stain remover. Pack the powder into the sock and rubber-band the sock shut just above the bottom. Use another rubber band to fix the sock to the end of the pole. Place the sock on top of an algaecide stain for 15 minutes. This will let the powder set on the stain and start to loosen it up.
