Salamanders are amphibians that are small and lizard-like in appearance. They have moist skin which requires them to be near or in water and damp woodlands or swampy areas. They can be a nuisance to some people, but are actually helpful, as they eat bugs, snails, spiders and worms. They help your garden by eating the bugs that are hurting the plants. It is best to leave them alone, but there are a few things that can be done if you have to get rid of them. Keep gutters and drain pipes clear and free of dead leaves and other vegetation so that water will drain down and away from foundations. Pools of stagnant water cause bugs to lay eggs and hatch, which will bring salamanders to eat the bugs. Spray all the rooms of your home with pesticide.
