Garbage cans can acquire a nasty smell, especially if the garbage that has been put in them is not bagged or has spilled or seeped out of a bag. Stainless steel cans will hold smells less than plastic or other cans, and you can use odor-neutralizing garbage bags to help keep odors down while the garbage is still in the can. Take your garbage cans outside on a dry day. Empty them of all debris, putting it into a garbage bag. Rinse out the can with a garden hose to remove any sticky bits of trash. Mix 1/2 cup bleach with four to five drops of dish-washing liquid in a gallon of warm water. Wear rubber gloves to protect your hands from the bleach.
