Osgood-Schlatter disease often presents in adolescents between the ages of 8 and 15. The pain is usually worse with activity such as jumping or running and climbing stairs. Treat the child’s complaints of pain with ice, rest and child doses of acetaminophen or ibuprofen. You should alternate ice for 15 to 20 minutes, and then heat for 10 to 15 minutes. Look for lumps or swelling just below the knee. If these are present or if the pain does not respond to home treatment, you need to see the doctor.
