Also known as holy basil, this herb is native to India. Some people use the tulsi plant medicinally to build the body’s immune system, and the Hindu religion considers it to be sacred. Although a tulsi plant is a perennial in tropical regions, people often grow it as an annual or keep it alive through winter by growing it indoors. Tulsi is a close relative to the sweet basil most commonly used in Western cooking and has aromatic, round-shaped leaves and clusters of purple or blue flowers that grow upright on racemes. If not pruned back, this plant can reach heights up to three to five feet. Fill a seed tray with an organic potting soil that has a pH of 5.5 to 6.5 since tulsi needs a slightly acidic soil. Be sure the seed tray has drainage holes. Sprinkle the tulsi seeds over the soil. Press down firmly on the seeds to push them just under the surface of the soil. Do not plant very deeply.
