How Do You Grow Barrenwort?
Epimedium, also known as barrenwort or Bishop’s miter, is a beautiful addition to shade-loving perennial gardens. The leaves resemble the shape of a bishop’s hat, which explains one of its names, and mounds to about 12 inches tall. Most of the species of barrenwort have clusters of small, star-shaped flowers that range in colors from white, cream, yellow, pink or rose. It makes a wonderful groundcover and some of its species are evergreen. Depending upon the variety, barrenwort is suitable for USDA zones 4 to 9. Select the site for the barrenwort. It needs dappled shade with protection from strong winds. It requires a moist, but well-drained soil that is heavily enriched with organic matter at least weeks before planting.
