Growing basil in your garden using the pocket method is so easy anyone can do it in any climate. You’ll combat drought, bugs, weeds and weather without any effort at all. Decide where you want your basil garden. Basil prefers a sunny location and heat. Cover the area with hay and/or straw. If you don’t know where to get hay and straw, look in the yellow pages for farmer supply. Call and ask where you can get hay. We buy big round bales that are rotten and can’t be used to feed livestock. Sometimes all we have to pay is for someone to deliver them to our place. One big round bale goes a long way. Cover the future garden about 8″ to 1′ thick with hay or straw. Walk away until time to plant. You can leave it like that for days, weeks or over the winter.
