How Do You Grow Fig Trees From Cuttings?
Growers often propagate the many variations of fig trees (30 species) within the family of ficus by taking cuttings. The edible fig tree (Ficus carica L.) is included within this list. Clippings taken early in the growing season can be coaxed into producing roots. The cutting then grows quickly and can produce edible figs within just two or three growing seasons. It is an economical way to reproduce fig trees while keeping the same genetic characteristics as the parent plant. Select 6- to 8-inch cuttings from the growing tips of the branches. Use branches that are at least 3/8 to 1/2 inch in thickness instead of the skinny new growth. Keep the cuttings damp until you are ready to work with them.
