However, if your house tends to be very dark in the winter, invest in a fluorescent grow light. This will help the lemongrass get the nutrients it needs to remain healthy. Make sure the pot you use has a drainage hole in the base and is at least 10 inches wide so that the lemongrass has room to spread. The herb is fairly sensitive to moisture, and waterlogged soil can cause it to rot. You may need to upgrade to a larger pot as the plant grows. Create a potting mix of 1/3 compost, 1/3 topsoil, 1/6 vermiculite and 1/6 peat moss. Fill the pot about 3/4 of the way with the potting mix.
