How Do You Grow Moss Pinks (Phlox Subulata)?

Moss pinks are low, mounding plants that bloom profusely in the spring with small flowers of white, red, pink or blue. They’re perfect for the sunny garden or rockery. Buy plants in containers. Common pot shapes range from 4 inches to gallon-size. Look for plants in nurseries in spring and summer, year-round in mild climates. Choose plants with healthy green foliage. (Foliage may turn golden yellow in winter.) Plant in a sunny spot in well-drained soil. Add a light application of organic fertilizer to the planting hole. Set the plants no deeper than they were in the containers. Place the plants 18 to 24 inches apart. Mulch around but not on top of the plant with 3 inches of organic compost. Water well until the soil is completely moist. Apply a light application of organic fertilizer to the top of the soil in early spring; follow directions on the package. Water weekly during dry summers. The soil should be completely moist.
