How Do You Grow Vegetables In Bales Of Hay Or Straw?

0

Hay bales provide an alternative way for almost any gardener to grow vegetables. Vegetables grow directly in the bales, rather than the soil. For those who do not have the physical agility to garden on their knees, or those who do not have extensive gardening equipment, gardening in hay bales is relatively easy. Adequate preparation and minimal care produces an abundant vegetable harvest. Arrange hay bales in desired location with largest surface area facing up. Hay bales need preparation for growing approximately 10 days before planting. Water hay bales thoroughly with a garden hose for three days. On the fourth day, add about 10 tbsp. of ammonium nitrate fertilizer to the top of each bale. Continue soaking the bales with water for a few days. On the seventh day, apply about 5 tbsp. of ammonium nitrate fertilizer to the top of the bales. On the tenth day, add 1 cup of 13-13-13 fertilizer to each hay bale and lightly water it in. Add 3 to 4 inches of topsoil or potting soil in a layer
