Hanging and taping drywall are comprised of two separate tasks. The first involves nailing or screwing the drywall sheets to the ceiling joists and wall studs. The second involves applying joint compound, tape and more compound over the nail heads and along the joints between drywall sheets. Each of these aspects is all about careful planning, abundant patience and smooth execution. Getting the job done right the first time is the best way to go. Install the ceiling sheets first. Position the first sheet in a corner, perpendicular to the ceiling joists. To prop the sheet up, you can use the top of your head, the hands of an assistant, a T-brace made of 2 by 2 wood strips or a rented drywall hoist. Drywall hoists are the best way to go, as you can crank them all the way to the ceiling with little effort. Make sure the sheet extends to exactly halfway across a joist, so that there is enough room to nail or screw two sheets to one joist. If you need to cut the sheet down to size, do so on
