How Do You Help A Depressed Teenager?
People normally get depressed at one time or another, but usually it’s short lived. Teenagers face a variety of situations that often contribute to depression. School pressures, peers, experiments with drugs, alcohol or sex, family problems or divorce are vehicles for despair. During this time, teenagers continue growing, maturing, developing character, self-esteem and thinking about the future. Help for a depressed teen begins with love and understanding. Talk with your teenager when you first see signs of depression. It’s important to discuss concerns in a non-judgmental way. Sometimes the best help comes through good listening–this enables the depressed teenager to process thoughts and emotions. Tell the teenager you want to help resolve the conflicts and depressed feelings. Note the boundaries or comfort levels the teenager puts in place.
