How Do You Hike Point Reyes Lighthouse?
There may be no better place on land than Point Reyes to watch migrating whales. From the lookout at Point Reyes, you can scan the ocean for little puffs of spray on the water’s surface. 22,000 gray whales migrate past here every winter on the Great Whale Highway. Point Reyes is a popular destination for visitors. Read on to learn some different ways to hike the National Park. Take the Sir Francis Drake Boulevard exit from U.S. 101 in Marin and follow the road about 20 miles west to the town of Olema. Take a right on Highway 1 a short distance to Bear Valley Road. Turn left on Sir Francis Drake Highway and go about 17.5 miles to the lighthouse. Make the short hike down to the lookout for some whale viewing. The trail is paved, but requires a dramatic descent down a railed stairway. There are three rest stops available for the climb back up.
