Chihuahuas are popular household pets due to their size, appearance, loving nature, courage and loyalty. As with any dog that lives indoors, Chihuahuas must be housebroken to prevent them from going potty in inappropriate areas. Training a Chihuahua to use the outdoors or a litter box for its potty area can be challenging. Yet, consistent and firm direction from the owner will inevitably teach the dog where to go for potty purposes. Crate or confine the dog when you are not supervising it. Dogs do not like to go potty in confined areas and will resist doing so. If you don't use a crate, fence off a two-foot x three-foot area in your home for confinement. Establish a regular feeding schedule for your dog, and refrain from giving it treats or snacks during the housebreaking phase.
