There are few instruments in the world that can provide a tone as smooth as a clarinet. Learning how to play the clarinet can be challenging, but the clarinet cannot be played at all if the reed is not properly placed onto the clarinet. Improper reed placement will prevent the clarinet from producing a proper tone, or it can result in no tone at all. Remove the ligature from the mouthpiece by turning the screw(s) on the ligature in a counterclockwise direction. The mouthpiece is the piece which fits on the end of the clarinet opposite the horn. The ligature is the metal clasp which fits around the mouthpiece and holds the reed in place. Place the flat side of the clarinet reed against the wedged opening of the mouthpiece. Position the reed so that the tip of the reed sits just below the lip of the mouthpiece. Slide the ligature over the reed and mouthpiece.
