How Do You Inspect For Quagga & Zebra Mussels?
Quagga and Zebra mussels are two types of invasive freshwater mussels that can cause severe damage to the environment. They are prevalent in freshwater lakes and in rivers throughout much of the United States. The Zebra mussel can be identified by its distinctive dark-striped shell, whereas the Quagga’s shell has much lighter stripes. Both varieties filter out large amounts of microscopic nutrients in the water and thereby negatively alter the food chain. Pull the boat from the water. Drain all water from the wells, bilges, and the motor. Carefully inspect the hull for any signs of Quagga or Zebra mussels. Young mussels may be very small. Inspect the wells, bilges, and the motor for any signs of mussels. Carefully examine axles, pulleys, wheels, and the trailer body, because mussels can also attach themselves to the trailer if it has spent even a short time in the water.
