Installing a porch light isn’t difficult, but it does require some preparation. Follow these steps. Shut off the power. Let everyone in the house know not to turn it back on. Locate the area where you want to add a light. If it’s too high to reach safely from the ground, get a ladder. Find the junction box for the porch fixture, then use a circuit tester to test the wiring and make sure no residual power remains. The junction box is a small metal box and should be located on your porch somewhere. Touch the end of the tester to the wires inside to test the circuit. Test all the wires. Loosen the fixture that holds the wires in place, then remove the old wiring that connects the junction box and the fixture.
