How Do You Install Ceramic Tile Over Cork Underlayment?
Ceramic tile usually is laid over plywood or cement board, but another option is cork underlayment. This may be counterintuitive to some, since it’s generally important that ceramic tile underlayment be very solid, but in fact cork underlayment, when properly installed, is strong and firm. One big advantage is the cork’s soundproofing qualities, muting noise through the floor. It’s best not to use this method in a bathroom or other high-moisture area. Clean and dry the subfloor. Roll out your first course of cork underlayment, cutting the course at the end with your utility knife by scoring and snapping. Pull back half of the strip of underlayment and spread acrylic adhesive on the floor with a notched trowel. Place the underlayment on the floor. Pull up the other half of the strip and do the same thing. Roll over the underlayment with a heavy floor roller to press in firmly into place. Repeat the process for each course of cork, laying them side by side and covering the whole floor. L
