Installing custom tile isn’t much different then installing regular tile, you just have to apply the tile in the correct order if your tiles make up a larger design or painting. Lay out the plastic vapor barrier over the wall studs. Make sure that the plastic overlaps the base flange of the shower. Staple the vapor barrier to the end studs and tuck it into the corners as tightly as you can. Install the barrier as one large piece since seams and edges will give water a chance to get it. Measure the dimensions of the shower walls and cut slabs of backer board to fit. Remember to add ΒΌ-inch space between the rim of the shower pan and the bottom of the backer board.
