Disposals can come in hand when installed in a kitchen sink, where food waste is likely to end up. A disposal can help to chop the food waste into manageable pieces, avoiding clogs in the sink’s drain. Installing a sink with a garbage disposal unit does require that you not only secure the disposal unit, but also that you connect a drain pipe to the disposal. While the disposal does change the process of installing the sink’s plumbing somewhat, you can still perform the job without the aid of a plumber. Switch off the power breaker switch that goes to the sink’s garbage disposal. Turn the house’s main water valve to the “off” position as well. Use a putty knife to remove any old putty in the sink’s drain hole. Squirt a thin layer of plumber’s putty on the top edge of the sink flange.
