Determine whether you want fluorescent, recessed or simple hanging light fixtures that turn downward over the kitchen island. Examine the space where you need to put the new lights. Look in the attic to determine if you can use existing circuits. Ascertain the focus, which will be the work area below the lighting. Kitchen islands must have lighting that shines downward appropriately. Cut a hole in the ceiling where you want the light fixture to hang.
