How Do You Install Valley Flashing To An Existing Roof?
Valleys in your roof are the areas where two descending sections of the roof meet. These downward-facing joints where water seeps in during rainfall are well known for developing leaks. Valley flashing is a layer of metal, fabric or aluminum installed on a roof between the roof itself and the shingles. You can install valley flashing to create an additional barrier to keep water from leaking through the shingles and the roof. Use a tape measure to measure the length of the valley in your roof. Go to a home supply store and buy the amount of flashing you need according to your measurements. Buy an additional 4 to 5 inches for each piece of flashing, as you need extra for overlapping the pieces. Put in valley battens on each side of the roof where you are going to lay the valley flashing. Lay the flashing across the upper flange, leaving an extra inch to stick out over the edge of the rim of the flange. Use a caulking gun to apply a thin line of caulking along the edge of the flange.
