Vent-free gas logs, although not as attractive as vent logs, produce more heat, making them a great way to help lower your heating costs. Vent-free gas logs burn clean, allowing the damper to remain shut while burning so the heat does not escape through the chimney. Unlike traditional wood logs, vent-free gas logs are convenient to start and stop, there is little clean-up and they can be fueled by either propane or natural gas. Measure the inside of the fireplace box to ensure the vent-free gas log will fit. Make a small scratch at the center point so you will know where to place the burner. Turn off the gas supply to the fireplace. Coat the end of gas line with pipe dope or Teflon tape. Add fitting to the end of the gas line where it enters the firebox, using a pipe wrench to tighten. Attach the flexible connector to the fitting on the burner. Place the burner into the firebox and connect the flex connector to the fitting attached to the gas line.
