Vinyl siding is a popular building material that can change the look of your house. Vinyl siding can be installed overtop of shingle siding. First, furring strips or sheets of rigid insulation need to be applied over the shingles to create a surface that is secure and consistent. Then the vinyl channels and panels can be fastened over the furring strips or insulation. Fasten furring strips or sheets of rigid insulation to the shingle siding with galvanized nails. Furring strips are strips of wood installed to create a framework over which the vinyl pieces will be mounted. Rigid insulation provides the added benefit of increased energy efficiency, but its primary purpose is to create a consistent and secure surface over which the vinyl can be installed.
