Platinum and white gold appear very similar at first glance. However, platinum is by far the more valuable. As a result, you may need to be able to determine if a ring is platinum rather than simply taking a vendor’s word for it–particularly if you are not buying from a licensed jeweler. Fortunately, there are some fairly quick and easy ways to know if a ring is platinum. Step 1 Compare the weight of the platinum and gold rings. Platinum is nearly twice as heavy as gold, so one ring should be clearly heavier than the other. Step 2 Check for a stamp. High-quality jewelry will be stamped with its make and metal. If the ring has a stamp inside that says 950pt or 850pt, then it is platinum (unless made by someone using a fake ring mold). Step 3 Scratch the metal using the edge of the diamond.
