Ceramic floor tiles are laid out from the center of the room, building toward the walls, so that any cuts that have to be made by the walls are the same on each end. That sounds simple enough, but there are sometimes complications. For example, what if the space at both ends is only 1 1/2 inches wide? It’s very difficult to cut tiles at smaller than 2 inches and tends to look bad. A “dry” layout ahead of time, with some minor adjustments as needed, will avoid such situations. Measure the floor along the bottom of each wall to find the middle. Mark it on the floor. Lay your snapline from one mark to the opposite mark across the room, cutting the floor in half. Do the same in the opposite direction, so you’ve cut the floor into four even sections. (If there are obstructions like tubs or kitchen islands, measure and mark from the walls as if those obstructions aren’t there.)
