Water heaters are a convenience that most homeowners would not want to live without. Water heaters come with both electric and gas power. Many gas water heaters have a small pilot light that stays lit continuously. This light is used to fire the burner that heats the water to maintain the desired water temperature. At times the pilot light will go out, and the owner will need to relight it. This is something most any homeowner can do with a screwdriver, lighter and basic knowledge of pilot lights. Kneel down by the front of the water heater and smell for gas. There should be very little gas smell. If the smell of gas is strong, call the gas company immediately. Look for three controls. There should be an on-off control, a temperature control and a pilot-light button. On some models, the on-off switch depresses and acts as a pilot-light button.
