In a few short steps, you can easily make a safe and effective 1.5% boric acid solution at home. Bring 1 qt.of water to a boil and then remove it from the heat source. This ensures that the water is sterile enough to use in and around the eyes. Add 1 tbsp. of medicinal boric acid powder to the boiling water and stir until the powder is dissolved. Let the solution cool to room temperature. Pour 1/4 cup of the cooled solution into a small cup. Soak a cotton ball in the solution. Apply the wash by gently rubbing the soaked cotton ball over your affected eye to remove any discharge. Throw away the used cotton ball and repeat with new ones. Fill an eye cup halfway with the boric acid eye wash. Press the cup tightly against your wide open affected eye. Tilt your head back and flood the eyeball with the solution.
