Coat trees are an age-old answer to the problem of needing a place to hang coats, jackets and hats. You can make a coat tree for much less than the cost of buying one. You can complete the project in about an hour. Step 1 Go to a lumber yard to get all of the materials. Any lumber yard should have all of the materials listed, saving you time. Step 2 Measure the pieces. Using a ruler, measure one inch from one end of the post on all four sides. Use the ruler as a straight edge to mark a line on each side. Measure the square section for the base from the plywood with the ruler. Use the ruler as a straight edge to draw the lines for cutting. Step 3 Cut the pieces.
