If you want to make your cake look like a present, you can put a bow on top. You can make one yourself with fondant. Fondant is a stiff candy that handles a bit like clay. • Make (at least) enough fondant for the bow you wish to make. • Roll the fondant into an even, square piece. • Cut it into strips about an inch wide, according to how wide you want the bow to be. The length of the strips can also vary, but should generally be four to six times the width. • Brush some water on the ends of a strip. Fold each strip into a loop, joining the two ends at an angle, and press the ends to stick them together. • Make many loops this way. If you know about how your bow will look, use longer strips for the lower loops. • Lay additional strips on the cake to be the ribbons leading up to the bow before you attach the bow itself.
