There are a couple of ways to generate the lava eruption: chemical reaction or pumping lava through. A pump volcano is generally less violent and thus less messy. But don’t let the simplicity fool you. There are ways to increase the lava eruption height with a model pump volcano. Cut a hole in the plastic bottle just large enough to fit rubber tubing to a half inch from the bottom of the bottle. Insert one tube end 1 inch in. Roll two to three paper plates into a cone over the plastic bottle. You can combine several plates by joining them with tape. Keep the apex of the cone open so you can see the bottle opening just inside the top. Set the bottle in the center of the cardboard case.
