A scatter plot is a statistical chart that maps out the correlation in results as dots along an X and Y axis. It is a visual tool that can be used to better understand the strength of a relationship between two variables and the direction of that relationship. Microsoft Excel 2007 allows you to create a scatter plot for mapping the correlation of variables in your own data. Launch Excel 2007. Create two columns of data, one for each variable, in an Excel spread sheet. These columns should be made up of a variable name as the header in the top row with the numerical data for the variable listed down the column below the header. It does not matter which order you list your variable data. Highlight the two columns by dragging you mouse down from the header over all of the numerical data.
