If you’re a student working on a science fair project or simply a hobbyist strapped for cash, buying a voltage transformer or even a 12-volt car battery might be cost prohibitive. However, with parts available at any hardware store, you can quickly build a 12-volt power supply. Cut a 4-inch long piece of wire and two 12-inch long pieces. Strip 5/8 inch of insulation from both ends of each wire using the wire cutters. Slide the exposed end of one of the 12-inch pieces into the base of an alligator clamp. Use the pliers to crimp the base of the alligator clamp tightly around the wire. Slide one end of the other 12-inch piece into the base of the other alligator clamp. Crimp the base tightly around the wire with the pliers. Put on the rubber gloves. Uncap the negative terminal of the first battery.
